Tips and Tricks for Quail Hunting in South Texas
With the start of the New Year at Double T Outfitters comes a new season of hunting. This time of year means quail hunting! We wanted to share some out our best tips and tricks for quail hunting in South Texas, to help make your next hunt a success.
Quail thrive on land that provides both open areas and wooded cover. They also prefer fields with seeds or grains for morning feedings. Often times they stay in areas with briar weeds instead of grass that is either too thick or overgrazed. Normal patterns for these birds include morning feedings in fields, resting in covered brush around mid-day, and possibly heading back to fields or weeded areas near late afternoon.
When quail hunting, we recommend using a shotgun between a 410 and 12 gauge. Most often, our hunters use a 20 gauge, though 28 gauge has been gaining popularity.
Safety is always an important factor when participating in any hunting or outdoor activity. Double T always recommends wearing a bright orange safety vest or other bright clothing, as this type of hunting usually requires you to be in close proximity to others.
Be sure to keep your gun safety on and keep the barrel pointed skywards at all times when the weapon is not in use. Also, never fire at a low flying bird. If the quail flies at an angle in which you must aim below horizon level, then it would be too dangerous a shot as you may hit another hunter or a bird dog.
When hunting over dogs, approach the dogs from behind. If you are coupled with another hunter, each should approach the dog from behind with one at either side, staying in a straight line from each. It's important to be aware of each other’s swing. Each hunter's swing range should start and mid-point between each other, and open out to their own side. Partners should never cross mid-points.
Before moving forward to flush the birds, each hunter should always be aware of each other and the location of the dogs.
